Hopped and Bothered; Lagunitas Brown Shugga'

Lagunitas -- Brown Shugga
Alcohol content 9.9%. The scent is instant and unsuspectingly sweet. Fig. Pine. Citrus. The pour is copper and red and rich. I pour this into a glass, then into my alabaster German beer mug. The first gulp is filled with citrus, sweet grapefruit, and an oily base of viscous brown sugar. The sweetness dances. The finish is strong and this is where the hops really come in, giving this beer an additional heft. Heavy, filled with malt and a biscuit and honey-like stickiness.

Buy if: you need an excuse?

Overall: this is the seasonal beer that Lagunitas has seen fit to show off, and it shows: bigger and better than anything else I've tried in months. Tops every barleywine I've jumped into.

5 out of 5.
